A note from the Gayle Loyola a Foster Care Alumni and Founder of YACD:
Something Happend To Me On The Way To The Ohio State Fair.
When I was in the third grade my reading teacher and the whole reading group laughed at me when I miss pronounced the word "island." I was so upset that I made up my mind that I would never read again. And, I did not read for seven years. In 1969 while I and my siblings were in Foster Care and before Children Services split us up a couple from our church took me and my siblings to the Ohio State Fair.
Even though this trip was about going to the fair and having fun and eating more food than we should the most exciting adventure happened on the way to the fair.

It was a pratice that each Saturday this couple would go to the local news stand to purchase several newspapers and this Saturday was no different. As I walked through the store I could not understand why someone would pay good money to buy newspapers. This couple not only purchased newspapers they sat down to read them over lunch and discussed the articals they read "with each other". All at once I realized that reading must be very important and from that moment on I began to read every newspaper and magazine I could get my hands on.
You may be wondering if we ever got to the fair? Well we did and we had a good time, but the adventure was not in the fair but the trip to the fair. The mentoring and learning process happend before lunch. The trip to the fair changed my life. This is what mentors do every day.
